Fathers involvement, engagement and support from birth is especially critical during key developmental years.
Research shows that engaged and involved fathers have been associated with increased levels of social responsibility and capacity for empathy, social maturity, self-control and self-esteem.
Kids have better language development and better life skills, social skills and fewer problems with peers.
Yet today there is still obstacles for men to be as present as they would like to be. This may be due to structures and policies at the workplace and social norms. Dads of yesteryear were not as involved as they are today. We now know through research, the many benefits of hands on Co-parenting not only for the child but for Dads self-esteem and couple’s relationship.
Dads / Non- birth partners often say that it doesn’t become really real for them until after the birth or even around the six-week mark when their baby becomes more responsive

As a Clinical Nurse Consultant working for a community based, perinatal mental health service I work collaboratively with Community Child Health Nurses.
